In order to cope with the high temperatures of
the North Africa the Sahara version of the M201 was fitted with an
electric fuel pump. Being electrically operated it was possible to
mount it on the outside of the main chassis (see Sahara section)
away from the heat generated by the engine and exhaust system.
These pumps were imported from America and two types were used.
Early 6 volt jeeps were fitted with an Autopulse pump (illustrated),
later 24 volt jeeps used a similar Electropulse pump.
At the end of the war in Algeria most Saharas were
converted for carrying weapons like ENTAC and the pumps were removed
leaving only the mounting brackets on the chassis as evidence of
once having being a Sahara version of the M201 jeep. |
